Learning how to make a grilled cheese sandwich is a simple process and one that even a beginner cook can learn to master swiftly and with little effort. The basic grilled cheese sandwich consists of very few essential ingredients, which makes this sandwich a tasty treat that can be cooked on a budget.
The first step to making a grilled cheese sandwich is choosing a type of bread and a type of cheese you would like to use. The classic grilled cheese sandwich typically consists of soft, white bread and American cheese. Many people prefer to switch out the bread and cheese types for wheat, rye, sourdough, or pumpernickel bread. Alternate cheeses may also be used and can include Swiss, mozzarella, cheddar, pepper jack, Colby or any other type of cheese or combination of cheeses.
Once you have your bread and cheeses selected, preheat a non-stick pan to a medium to medium high heat and lightly butter one side of each piece of bread. Place one piece of bread, buttered side down, on the pan and layer your cheese on the bread. For some of the fancier cheeses that come in blocks you can grate the cheese right onto the bread. Next, you will place the remaining piece of bread, buttered side up, on top of the cheese. After about two minutes of cooking on medium to medium high heat, you will flip the sandwich so the other buttered side of the bread can cook to a medium golden brown. The cheese will melt in the middle of the sandwich as the bread cooks on the outside.
Total preparation and cooking time for a grilled cheese sandwich can take less than ten minutes.
